32

I HADN'T BEEN BACK TO HOGTOWN since the murder. My stomach roiled as the Reliant pulled up to the curb across from a small grocery store a few blocks from the vacant lot. Mike stared out the windshield, his eyes unreadable.

“You okay?”

He blinked a few times. “I’m good.” He turned to face me. “I’ve got some informants in Hogtown, people I’ve helped out. They said that this guy, Benin, would be making collections for the Blue Eclipse Boys tonight.”

“Who’s Benin?” I asked.

“Mid-level enforcer, nobody really special, but still not someone an average person would want to tangle with. I figured this would be a good chance to lean on him, find out if they had anything to do with what happened to Lux.”

I studied Veritas’s profile for a moment. “Why didn’t your dad just give you the license?”

His head snapped around. Although his face was obscured by his mask, his eyes registered his surprise. “What?”

“I mean, you obviously know what you’re doing. You have informants, the equipment, the training. Why go through all the nonsense of the TV show?”

Veritas settled back in his seat. “A couple of reasons. First of all, Dad thought he could make money from the show. He has a business to run, after all. Second, he wanted us to earn the license.” He fell silent for a moment. When he spoke again, his voice had dropped to a mere whisper. “And if he was going to give it to anyone, it wouldn’t be me.”

My eyes widened.

Veritas wouldn’t meet my gaze. Instead he stared out the windshield, tears forming in the corner of his eye. He cleared his throat. “We’d better settle in. It might be a long wait.”
